Ladysmith RCMP Detachment

Project Stats

Type: New Build
Client: District of Ladysmith
Location: Ladysmith, BC
Size: 929 m2
Delivery Method: Construction Management

The town of Ladysmith is a small Vancouver Island community approximately 30 km south of Nanaimo. In 2003, KMBR Architects Planners Inc., in conjunction with Liberty Contract Management Inc. were commissioned to design a new building for the town's RCMP detachment. The new facility is a two-storey split level structure on a sloping triangular building site. The wooded ravine of Holland Creek on the west side of the building provides a pleasant outlook for work stations, the meeting room and the fitness centre.

In response to the context of a small rural community, the architecture employs the use of natural cedar siding, exposed glu-lam timbers, and exposed sandblasted concrete as the primary building materials. Large expanses of clear glass provide the building occupants daylight and views, and project an open, friendly and approachable image to the surrounding neighbourhood. .
